Below: Senate President Murray listening to Plymouth North
High School students on their visit to the State House on
May 10 with Representatives Levy, deMacedo
and Calter.
The
Senate on May 26th passed its version of the fiscal year 2012 budget with
a focus on bringing efficiency and cost-savings to state government
through necessary reforms while protecting our Commonwealth's most vulernable citizens with full funding for Early
Intervention and Department of Mental Health inpatient beds, and
increased funding for adult mental health services and veterans outreach
centers in one of our toughest budget cycles yet.
The Senate budget also provides funding for local tourism
councils, studying Cape wastewater treatment and costs, and Bourne's
educational efforts for children of military families and the
Massachusetts Military Reservation. The budget also protects funding for
nuclear monitoring, the Nathan Hale Foundation and the University of
Massachusetts Cranberry Station.
We also saw Plymouth receive a steel beam from Ground Zero
on May 5th, an honor that was bestowed to only a select number of
towns. The beam will be added to Plymouth's 9-11 Memorial this
September.
There were several other important events in May,
including the "29 Who Shine" award ceremony honoring a
Massachusetts Maritime Academy student, the "Unsung Heroines"
event where five deserving women from the Plymouth and Barnstable
District were recognized, and the 11th Annual Massachusetts Missing
Children's Day at the State House where I was honored to be recognized
for my support and commitment to the children of our Commonwealth.
