https://app.icontact.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/660731/e2282ae6a66364712c765365cae42bc1/image/jpegThis legislative session we have accomplished major goals with bills to help the Plymouth and Cape area and the Commonwealth as a whole, including economic development, foreclosure protection and health care cost relief for small businesses.

The Senate is looking forward to a new session in January to continue our reform agenda, in which health care payment reform will be a top priority.

We in the Senate have continued to work though the summer and will continue working through the end of the year.

Keep on reading to learn more about what has been happening in your local communities.

South Shore Community Action Council in Plymouth Receives $163,000 for Workforce Training

On August 19, South Shore Community Action Council in Plymouth received $163,000 in federal stimulus money for workforce training courses.

South Shore Community Action is a great example for all of us about the power of compassion, and the determination to make a difference.

In these trying times, when more and more families are struggling to make ends meet, it is going to take all of us coming together to help our friends and neighbors.

This money will go a long way toward helping people qualify for jobs as our economic recovery continues.

Barnstable and Falmouth Housing Authorities Receive Funds Totaling $80,820 for Weatherization

On August 23, Barnstable and Falmouth Housing Authorities received $63,965 and $16,855, respectively, in federal weatherization assistance recovery funds to replace old and inefficient heating systems.

Revitalizing our family public housing developments is a crucial step towards building stronger communities. This grant will help Barnstable and Falmouth improve the quality of life for residents and will have both a short and long term economic benefit for the community.

These funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), and will create jobs and provide cleaner, more efficient energy.

Massachusetts is already ahead ofthe nation in education, but we should never rest on our laurels. This great news is the latest example of our ongoing commitment to always do the best for our schools and our students. Along with recent Education Reform legislation and continuing high expectations, this funding will help us reach even higher marks for quality education and success for all students.

Applications are Now Being Accepted for the Fall Citizens' Legislative Seminar at the State House

I am pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 65th Citizens’ Legislative Seminar, sponsored by the Massachusetts Senate, to be held this fall on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 and Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Citizens’ Legislative Seminar (CLS) is a citizen workshop that aims to better educate the public on the Commonwealth’s legislative process.  Established in 1976 through a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, this two-day workshop features presentations by Senators and staff on aspects of the day-to-day experience of legislators in the Commonwealth. These topics include the formal and informal legislative process, the budget, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate, and the future of the Legislature.

The CLS culminates in a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned about the Senate to fill the roles of Senators in order to actively experience the legislative process.

I invite any interested citizen to contact my office at (617) 722-1500 by Friday, September 17, for more information on this innovative and unique opportunity to experience life in the Senate firsthand.
